Linoleum Monotype from the PHYSIS Series (2003).

PHYSIS, from the Greek, is the name that encapsulates the inquiry into the ultimate nature of things—their origin, what is essential and unchanging.

PHYSIS asks consciousness about itself as it traverses the senses, guiding the formation of the image of both the internal and external world. It addresses the phenomenon of the movement of “becoming,” the process of Life itself. The impression of an image is, above all, a desire to discover something that does not yet truly exist. The technique, therefore, blends intuition with expertise. It is up to intuition to dare a leap beyond material possibility. Thus, thinking about colors, shapes, cutouts, and sequences occurs as improvisation.

The PHYSIS series followed this flow for several days, forming a vast set of variations, totaling nearly 200 monotypes. The first exhibition, in 2003, featured an introduction by Brazilian philosopher Olgária Matos, who quoted: the gods never disappeared; it is men who have lost the ability to see them (F. Pessoa). The sequences arise on their own, from each surprise born of the gesture. Inking the matrix and choosing colors is merely a suggestion—what ultimately emerges is new even to the artist. Natural plants were used as aesthetic elements in the development of the visual themes. The final composition emerges from the spontaneous interaction between organic forms and the application of color, resulting in a unique amalgam. The image is only fully revealed after being lifted from the press, giving the work an intense and unpredictable visual impact—an essential characteristic of the monotype process. Graphic ink on 224gsm Canson paper. Original artwork not for sale.
